Make sure CarPlay is enabled. On your iPhone, open the Settings app > General. Tap on CarPlay. Choose your car from AVAILABLE CARS, or press and hold the voice control button on your car's steering wheel to start the setup process and pair your car with your phone.

Mazda6 Touring 2017. Getting mines done today, 2018 CX-5, i asked them about free retrofit, they said when they sold the CX-5 apple carplay was not accounted for in the price of the car, so it would not be free. Installation is $399.99. I just emailed my dealer and said it'd be $400 retrofit. Bought a 2018 CX-5 in May.
Ohh gotcha. I read on several other forums that the mazda navigation is supposed to remain once Apple Carplay is installed, so that's why I'm trying to crowd source a solution. Not that I don't love Apple Carplay, but it would be good to have the Mazda navigation as a backup in case I either don't have my phone or don't have service on it.

I then updated my iPhone XR to iOS 16.6.1 and now my success rate is about 98%. By the way, wireless CarPlay uses Bluetooth to establish connection and then uses WiFi for data exchange.
